2017 was a good year in food especially here in portland oregon... i knew moving here would mean that i would get to eat all of the food this city had to offer but i was blown away by the little gems i found. below is a list of a few of my favorites from ramen that will make you forget about LA ramen to dairy free soft serve that feels almost guilt free. if you ever find yourself in portland check out at least one of these spots! what are your favorite restaurants in your hometown? let me know in the comments below! enjoy!
tonkotsu red- yes, i have eaten ramen in LA and yes i still think this bowl of ramen is fantastic. you get a big bowl of spicy pork bone broth topped with spinach, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, leeks, green onion, chashu pork and a soft boiled egg. the chashu pork is the star! it just melts in your mouth ooooh it’s so good I even add extra pork hehe. choose marukin over all other spots in pdx, trust. (ps they also gave vegan ramen that looks amazing).
pork belly rice bowl- melt in your mouth pork belly on top of a pillow of steamy hot rice served with curry lime collard greens, roasted mushrooms and pickled cucumber. when i eat this rice bowl i am reminded that white rice is in my blood. it takes me home.
baked egg scramble- eggs that come in the cutest little cast iron pans, yes please. their menu changes seasonally however there is always a delicious combo of veg/and chèvre my fav.
ableskivers- danish pancakes aka fluffy pancake balls of happiness? what more could you want in life!? served with the best house-made lemon curd I have ever eaten and lingonberry jam too. everything here is tasty but let’s be honest i mostly come here for these babies.
fried chicken plate with curry and roti- again white rice and meat, portland really gets me. hat yai serves food from southern thailand, so not the typical thai I was used to. the chicken is sweet, spicy, crunchy and dreamy. if naan and a buttered tortilla had a baby it would be roti, which is served with a bowl of curry that you should pour all over the chicken, the rice basically just inhale it. OK. the service here is top-notch too, they give you hand wipes when they see you getting intimate with your chicken wings.
eb and bean
dairy free soft serve with Tom bumble crumble and coconut whipped cream- this is by far my most talked about spot. in my early twenties I ate yogurtland everyday for at least 2 years, so i can proudly say that i am a valid source. here they use local ingredients, have an exciting changing menu and many vegan, gluten free and nut allergy friendly toppings. there is truly something for everyone, i love this place so much.
cheese & crack snack shop
snack plate-if you love cheese and crackers and are also the type of person that needs a little sweet with your savory...look no further. cheese and crack is just that. i honestly crave their snack plates, not only are they cute as can be but they are actually very filling! shoot if they delivered I don’t think I would leave the house. the snack plates include house-made butter crackers, savory oatmeal cookies(which sorry are too good to share), baguette, olives, cornichons, djon, honey, chocolate ganache and your choice of cheeses etc. i usually pick either the cheddar with brie brûlée or the fromage blanc with marionberry jam. they also serve wine, beer, frosé, and my personal favorite frozen lemonade.
little t american baker
abc sandwich- apple...bacon...chèvre! and get this, it is served on a pretzel bun! i feel as if this sandwich was made for me. justin picks up bread from this bakery for work once a week so i always make sure to tag along (to enjoy his company of course but knowing this sandwich will be there doesn't hurt). also, not pictured is their brownie... it is thee perfect brownie and sometimes i accidentally eat the whole thing while waiting for my sandwich...oops.
well that’s all folks, eat your hearts out,
